An excerpt from the conversation I had with my masseuse at the spa today (which has been heavily edited for grammatical errors):
Masseuse: So you’re getting married in 2 weeks? Very exciting. Let me guess, your fiance is not a Singaporean.
Me: Wow, how did you know?
Masseuse: Because Singaporean guys like girls with fair skin. Your skin tone is so brown…surely your fiance is someone from overseas, maybe an “Ang Moh” (literally translated to “Red hair” meaning white person)?
So I take that as a/an_______? Frankly, I’ve been so out of touch with Singaporean culture that I didn’t realize that Singaporean guys actually like their women fair and possibly pasty looking. So I guess I should be thankful that I found someone (obviously non-Singaporean) “color blind” to my “brown” skin tone (in addition to all the other blessings I’ve had in this relationship).
Maybe I should quit exercising in the day and instead bathe myself in skin whitening creams, especially for the big day. Then again, I’m comfortable in my own skin. So, who cares?
