Around the aircon-less apartment

Pictures falling off, plants dying, and a DIY cooling contraption. We even found a huge dead fly on our coffee table.

pobrepenguin

My little winter penguin couldn’t take the heat and fell off the wall.

pobretomate

Scorched tomato plant leaves. Had to bring it in to the apartment to save it. Sniff.

This towel tent is Bry’s great contraption. He took a lousy cooler that does NOT cool but instead blows out warm air, to blow against a bunch of wet towels hanging on a drying rack to produce COOL air. It’s super ghetto but it works to some degree. I guess the bigger question is: why haven’t we invested in an air con or a proper cooler? Go figure. We also had to sleep on the floor last night cos the bed with the thick mattress and good quality sheets was just unthinkably hot.

Just a couple more days of this and we’ll hopefully get to complain about the cold weather.

How to survive in this heatwave (without an air conditioner)

  • 1) Keep sticking your head in the fridge/freezer
  • 2) Splash water on body every hour
  • 3) Sit infront of a big cooler fan
  • 4) Have a glass of ice water
  • 5) Hide in the room with blinds and curtains shut
  • 6) Stay away from the laptop that emits heat
  • 7) DO NOT leave the apartment and if you really need to, slap a ton of sunblock, wear a big hat, sunglasses, and a cool, long-sleeve top
  • 8) Oh, and cover the legs too — very important because the heat radiating from the ground, from experience, is literally painful to bare the legs.

This heatwave is supposed to go on for just a few more days. The simple solution to half the problems would be to get a portable air conditioner BUT we’re too much of a scrooge to pay to be comfortable for the rest of the week. Whew.

AND I can’t believe people are battling out for a grand slam in this weather; it just sounds inhumane. I wonder if the health authorities will try to put a halt to the games?

Here’s one of the few new necklaces I made yesterday with a hint of blue. Inspired by my longing for…for winter!

What’s new?

It’s shocking how quickly time flies. I decided to give myself a little break from crafting over the weekend and from obsessive Etsy-ing, and before I knew it, it’s already WEDNESDAY. !!!

So here I am: BACK! And in BLACK! : )

More new items will be added in the next couple days. My 2-month Etsyversary is coming up (yes, I’ve been totally sucked in and converted to an Etsian, as you can tell), and I’ve had 58 sales so far and a couple more to come before the month ends. I’m so grateful. Thanks to you, and you, and you, and you!!!

新年快樂!Happy Lunar New Year!

It’s the Chinese New Year: Year of the Ox! And I guess the Korean New Year, too. [I've always been saying "Chinese New Year" assuming that all the Asians who celebrate it are Chinese. But Bryan reminded me that Koreans celebrate it, too, and I guess they're more PC about this because they call it the Lunar New Year.]

Oh, well. Here is another one of my attempts to recreate the Chinese New Year 氣氛 “atmosphere” away from all the family back home: rolled oat cookies! These super delicious yummies, first introduced to the YAP family by my Aunt Christine years ago, have pretty much had their presence in our YAP homes every New Year, along with the other typical goodies like pineapple tarts, little curry puff like cookies, coconut cookies, pork jerkies (bah-kuah; WAAaay better than beef jerkies), etc.

And as you can imagine, I’ve been gobbling down a mixture of these cookies and pineapple tarts that I made a couple days before, to “celebrate” the festive occasion. Got to hit the swimming pool or the running track sooon.

步步高升,身體健康!!(Reach to greater heights, and stay healthy! — well, do that after the Chinese New Year feasting.)
