a short hello

i love my job but am frustrated by the system and shocked at how backward the speech-language pathology service model is in the schools here. my caseload number here is so high that that in california would be considered illegal. i’ve also been working quite a bit, often at least 1-2 hours after dinner. and am still finding my to-do list growing longer and longer everyday. looking forward to the 2 week school holiday to catch up with all my paperwork and lesson plans!!

    Hello there Cherbie,

I was browsing through the web, scanning for facts that would finally help me decide wether or not I should do Speech Pathology in University. Applications are gettin nearer, and I have to say after pondering and researching for months, I have not yet decided what I want to do.

I don’t know any chinese speech pathologist and was very happy to come across your blog. I’m currently living in Perth, completing year 12. I hope you could give me some advise or answers to these ‘edu’ inquiries..I would reall really appreciate it! :-)

1)* I am very uncertain about the English skills and standards required in this course. I know the demand is high, but how high? I am from Malaysia, and as you know, Malaysia does not really put a strong emphasis on improving the English speakers at a high school level. However, I can speak good, clear english. But, when it comes to writing, I am not sure where I stand, as I never had the chance to be stretched in that area yet. Could you give me a rough idea on what are the demands on your English writing and speaking skills to succeed in this course?

2)* Will our style of speaking deeply affect our career as an SLP in Australia?

3)* What are some of the problems you face in your course? Cons of the course? Why did you choose this course, and in what way do you feel it is suitable to your personality? are u an introvert/extrovert? LOL (i’m sorry, i just had to scrrew this inquiry. argh)

4)*I have no experiences in taking care of children and the like. However, I don’t think I have any resistance towards them for now. Am i taking a risk for not having some of these basic nurturing abilities/passions an SLP student must have? (or should have before entering this course)

I know you must be a very busy student, but I hope you could reply me to my email? I would really, deeply appreciate it! as i am in a dilemma right now on choosing the ‘uni path’ and your advice would be a great encouragement and a light to my dark, neverending, tunnel of contemplating and worrying.

    Thank you for reading,
    best regards!
    Eunice, perth.
